reThinking-naZa

2014   Ho, Volta Region, Ghana

In 2014, I performed reThinking-naZa in collaboration with the Asogli Traditional State during their yam festival celebration leading the procession of the chiefs and Elders with police escort to their grand Durbar. The performance created shocks, tensions, waves, vibrations, and several ambiguities among the audience as I moved through the street in chains, covered with mud while being fully protected by the security team that were not invited to protect me. The uncontrolled gestures of the securities made the ‘silence’ noisier as the dispatch riders redirected the movement of cars to make way for my arrival. It was a way to hack into old traditions that sees performance as spiritual embodiment and as part of the daily social life of the people without prejudice
